'It's All About Me!' Giants Rookie WR Malik Nabers Making Spectacular Camp Statement

    By Mike Fisher,

New York Giants rookie Malik Nabers is in the midst of a stellar training camp. His own Giants teammates can't contain him. The dual-practice-foe Detroit Lions couldn't control him. And the Rookie of the Year buzz?

    It seems unstoppable, too.

"At the end of the day, it's all about me. It's not even about them," said Nabers, the Giants' high-first-round pick in the recent NFL Draft. "It's about what I do when the ball is in the air and what I do about having that mindset of catching the ball, getting as many yards as I can, helping my team win."

    Cocky? Confident? Correct?

The LSU product is just 21. Even for the guy picked at No. 6, this is supposed to take time. But there he was on Tuesday dead in the middle of a skirmish with the Lions ... putting a capper on a two-day event during which a lot of critics' eyebrows were raised and a lot of critics' mouths were shut.

"I got nice, good work from these guys at Detroit,” Nabers said. “Having that mindset of getting back into that football mentality - that was great."

This work was as close to "full speed'' (complete with the desire to actually "hit'' an opponent) as Nabers has seen so far.

There will be another gear to be reached as preseason games arrive ...

And yet another one after that.

But "speed'' doesn't really seem to be among Nabers' problems.

"The game is fast; the level of competition is very high," Nabers said. "That’s really about it. There are plays to be made when the ball is thrown in the air.”

Inevitably, there will be a learning curve here. And there will be valleys to go with the peaks. But New York has for the longest time been a bit on the shy side when it comes to consistently spectacular offensive playmakers; Odell Beckham is long gone and now so is Saquon Barkley.

The need is there. And so is the cockiness. Or the confidence. Or ... whatever we wish to label this.

"I'm a competitive person. I'm able to go out and play with these guys,'' Nabers said. "I can compete with these guys in the league. ...

“Just continue to be me. That’s all I can say is I have talks with myself, ‘Just continue to be me.”
