Inside The Lines: Getting to know Miami Hurricanes QB commit Dereon Coleman

The Miami Hurricanes have their quarterback of the 2026 class with Jones (Fla.) three-star gunslinger Dereon Coleman on the board after his July 3 commitment to the Canes.

Now Coleman is hoping to build the 2026 class as the face of the group for Canes head coach Mario Cristobal and his staff.

“I’ve been ready for that,” Coleman said. “As a quarterback, you’ve got to know that’s going to happen. You’ve got to be the face of the class, and when you get to the school, you’ve got to be the face of the school. Everybody is going to look at you and wonder if you’re doing the right thing; they’re going to do the right thing and follow you.”

With 2026 four-star wide receiver Malachi Toney and linebacker Jordan Campbell alongside Coleman in the class, he’s looking to help add more prospects from the Sunshine State and beyond.

One name in particular is his Jones High School teammate Larry Miles, who recently earned an offer from Miami after a strong showing at this summer’s Legends Camp, impressing many on hand, including Hurricanes legend Michael Irvin .

“This first one I’m going for is the wide receiver at Jones, Larry Miles,” the Miami commit said. “After, we’re going out of the state to get all the others.”

This past season, Coleman threw for 2,236 yards and 16 touchdowns while adding 247 yards and four scores on the ground after sharing reps with former four-star and current Florida State quarterback Trever Jackson. He has his sights set on even more this upcoming year.

“A state ring and over 5,000 yards,” Coleman said when asked about his goals for his junior season. “1,000 rushing yards and 50 touchdowns. I’m going to send my standards, and I’ve got to meet those.”
