Olympic athlete lifts the lid on 'floating athletes village' on cruise ship

Peruvian surfer Lucca Mesinas has opened up about his stay on the Aranui 5 cruise ship, which is 45 minutes from the surf in Tahiti.

Athletes in the Paris Olympic Village suffered from alleged worms in their food, and the cardboard beds weren't a hit either. However, 9,300 miles away from Paris, moored in French Polynesia, athletes were treated to private rooms with the sea breeze floating in through sliding glass doors.

Athletes also reportedly have access to the bar, dancing room, tattoo parlor, ping pong, foosball, and other activities. Some took to TikTok to share their experience on-board the Aranui 5 cruise ship, describing it as a party boat - not an Olympic boat.

Surfers were also treated to stunning views of the French Polynesia's sea life. An Olympic surfing event was gatecrashed by a humpback whale earlier this week, as the huge mammal breached the water. Peruvian surfer Mesinas has praised the living conditions on the ship as smooth sailing.

“We had good food, we had ping-pong, things to do over there,” Mesinas told TMZ . “We were allowed to leave the boat anytime to go to surf. It was pretty fun anyway.

"The room was pretty nice, the bed was really nice too, the only bad thing was that the boat was moving a lot like every day," he added. "Because there was a lot of wind and waves it was kind of difficult to sleep sometimes.”

Sexual activity at the Olympics is a much-talked-about subject every four years. In events gone by, beds have been purposely uncomfortable. The Paris Village sleeping quarters were described as "anti-sex beds."

On the cruise ship, beds were more comfy, and Mesinas refused to rule out hooking up with another athlete. "Maybe one," he joked. And although the two-time Olympian lost in the second round of the Men’s competition last week, he says the Peruvians were the best ping-pong players on the ship.

"I'm pretty sure we were [the best], the Peruvians," he said. "As surfers, every time we travel, we play ping-pong all the time. I'm not amazing at it, [but] all the team is pretty good at it."

The ship can accommodate about 230 passengers in over 100 cabins, with eight guest decks, a spa, and a gym. However, some athletes opted not to stay in the floating Village. some national teams and individuals rented homes closer to the competition site, as the ship was docked 45 minutes away from the competition zone.
