‘A Simple Favor 2’ Director Paul Feig “Would Love” A Theatrical Release, But Says “It’s Definitely Aiming Toward Streaming”

Paul Feig would like audiences to see A Simple Favor 2 in theaters on the big screen. But, as the director told Decider in a recent Zoom interview , fans may have to settle for streaming the as-of-yet-untitled sequel at home, on Amazon Prime Video.

“No heavy decision has been made yet,” Feig replied, when asked if A Simple Favor 2 would get a theatrical release before the streaming release on Amazon. “I mean, it’s definitely aiming towards streaming. But who knows?”

The director added that he “would love it” if the movie did get a theatrical release. But it sounds like that decision is out of Feig’s hands.

The 2018 dark comedy thriller, A Simple Favor, stars Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively as two very different types of moms. Emily (Lively) is career-driven, sexy, and aloof. Stephanie (Kendrick) is stay-at-home, dorky, and mild-mannered. When the women form an unlikely friendship, Stephanie is drawn into Emily’s world of intrigue, and reveals she has a dark side, too.

The film was well-liked by both critics and audiences, and earned $97.6 million at the worldwide box office, off an estimated production budget of $20 million. That’s a financial success, even if it’s not a runaway hit. In the years since, A Simple Favor has found new life on streaming. The film quickly shot to the top of Netflix’s Top 10 Movies list when it was added to the streamer in May. Though the first film was released in theaters by Lionsgate, the sequel will be distributed by Amazon MGM Studios, which is also the distributor for Feig’s new comedy, Jackpot! , streaming on Prime Video next week. Most recent Amazon MGM releases have been streaming only, with some exceptions—such as the Zendaya-led sports drama Challengers .

Kendrick and Lively are both returning for the Simple Favor sequel, along with Henry Golding. New additions to the cast include Allison Janney and Italian actor Michele Morrone, with the latter playing Emily’s new husband . Feig told Decider that he expects the sequel to release in 2025, and added that an early test screening of his director’s cut “tested through the roof.”

“From the test audience we had, there was a majority of fans of the first movie, they were very, very happy,” Feig said. “It’s definitely not coming out until next year.”

Does that mean we can expect A Simple Favor 2 teaser trailer to drop soon?

“We’ll slowly sneak out thoughts about it,” Feig said. “I also want to keep a lot of it undercover. Nothing I love more than people seeing a movie, not quite knowing what’s going to happen. That’s always the thing with trailers. How do we do a trailer, and make people want to see this, but not give anything away? It’s not easy.”
