Liverpool would have issue meeting Premier League rules after Martin Zubimendi transfer

Liverpool must sell before the Reds can register Martin Zubimendi in order to adhere to Premier League registration rules.

Arne Slot’ s senior squad is currently 'full', with 25 over-age players needing to be registered for the Premier League. This is why the club are more open to deals for the likes of Tyler Morton, Owen Beck, Sepp Van den Berg, Fabio Carvalho , and Wataru Endo this summer.

Liverpool have just over three weeks until the transfer window closes, and Slot is still awaiting his first signing. However, the Dutchman declared sporting director Richard Hughes is making moves and incomings are expected before the 11pm deadline on August 30.

According to The Athletic , Liverpool is exploring a deal to sign Zubimendi, as the club looks to strengthen the squad. The 25-year-old has a $65m (£51m/€60m) release clause, and he's being tracked by a number of suitors from the Premier League and elsewhere.

However, Zubimendi's release clause would need to be paid in full to Real Sociedad and the La Liga team are unwilling to move on that figure, which could prove to be a problem for the Reds. Liverpool would also need to convince Zubimendi to leave.

But in order to make room for new signings such as a central defender, defensive midfielder and winger, space must be cleared. Calvin Ramsay, Luke Chambers and Fabian Mrozek have left on loan, while Anderson Arroyo joined Spanish club Burgos on a permanent basis.

There are 25 players already in the squad who must be registered as senior players for the upcoming Premier League campaign. A minimum of eight homegrown players must be named in the 25-man senior squad, which Liverpool will easily meet, but the club currently have no space for signings over the age of 21.

This has been inflated by Morton, Beck, Van den Berg, Carvalho, Nat Phillips and Marcelo Pitaluga all returning from loan spells last season. All six are eligible as homegrown but will take up a spot in the senior squad if they are registered, along with Ryan Gravenberch - who was on the U21 list last season.

The likes of Jarell Quansah , Conor Bradley , Harvey Elliott and Stefan Bajcetic are set to be on the U21 list, but any signings born before January 1, 2003 would represent an over-age player.

Two potential signings include Real Sociedad’s Zubamendi and Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United . Both are credible targets but, at 25 and 23 years of age respectively, would need to be registered if they were brought to Anfield .

This mens outgoings are crucial to Liverpool’s transfer window. Liverpool have already rejected bids for Van den Berg, Phillips, Carvalho and Endo, while there is additional interest in both Morton and Beck.
