When the New York Jets decided to acquire edge defender Haason Reddick from the Philadelphia Eagles, they probably didn't imagine the situation would be so extreme . He is not willing to practice or play without a contract extension, and the Jets leadership doesn't seem inclined to execute a new deal while he's out of the team.

Reddick is being fined $50,000 per day of training camp practice missed, which has already reached the $750,000 mark. And things are about to get even more intense. Zack Rosenblatt, who covers the Jets for The Athletic, mentioned that Reddick can get heavier fines for missing preseason games.

"For each preseason game he skips, he'd be fined an entire week's worth of regular season pay, which is 1/18 of his salary. On a $14.25M salary, that equates to $791,666. Which means he'd be fined $2.37M if he doesn't report before any of the three preseason games."

So Reddick's fines and the workout bonus he forfeited can add up to something around $4 million. And that's even before the regular season starts. By that point, if he doesn't show up, the Jets can simply not pay his base salary, which is paid throughout the season.

Haason Reddick is ready for that , though. Even though his $14.25 million base salary is a significant amount of money, he will be 30 by September, so maybe this is his last chance of getting a big contract extension with multi-year guarantees. Throughout his NFL career, Reddick has made $51.145 million in salaries, so he has some security to fight with the Jets.

The big problem for Reddick is that, even though he is in the last year of his deal, he won't be a free agent next season if he doesn't show up. If he misses the season because of a contract dispute, his deal will toll for 2025.

Based on the new CBA, the Jets can't return the fines money to Reddick if/when a new deal gets done. The fines are also mandatory. Therefore, Reddick will have to get a significant contract, with solid guarantees, to make up for what he's losing.

Haason Reddick has played for the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, and Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL. Over his last four seasons, playing as a full-time edge defender, he's had 50.5 sacks. Previously, he had been an edge/off-ball linebacker hybrid.

The Jets acquired Reddick back in April, sending the Eagles a 2026 third-round pick. It can become a second if Reddick plays at least 67.5% of the team's defensive snaps this season and achieves at least 10 sacks.
