Queen Woo is a new period action K-drama starring Ji Chang-Wook and Jeon Jong-Seo. It is all set to premiere on August 29, 2024, on TVING. However, ahead of the drama’s release, it got involved in a controversy regarding the characters’ costumes. These were shown in different trailers of the series shared by the streaming platform.

The controversy began when the audience started criticizing the costumes worn by the character of Queen Woo in the trailer. As reported by OSEN, several viewers pointed out that the cast members’ costumes have a more assertive Chinese outlook than that of the traditional Korean hanbok.

As mentioned above, Ji Chang-Wook’s upcoming K-drama Queen Woo has found itself amidst a costume controversy. Since TVING released the trailer of the historical series, many audiences have criticized the characters’ costumes. They believe that these costumes have a more Chinese essence than the Korean Hanbok. Some viewers have also noted that the props, specifically the hat worn by Kim Mu-Yeol’s character Eulpaso, share similarities with those shown in the Chinese period dramas, as per OSEN.

On Wednesday, August 7, 2024, the production team behind the TVING original K-drama released an official statement. This was in response to the costume controversy associated with historical inaccuracy.

As reported by OSEN , the statement says, “‘Empress Woo’ (Queen Woo) is a historical drama that was recreated based on historical figures….We received advice from experts based on verifiable related historical documents and records, and we created the drama based on imagination to express the era for which there are no records. We hope you look forward to it as a unique content called a ‘chase action historical drama’.”

In addition to Ji Chang-Woo, Jeon Jong-Seo, and Kim Mu-Yeol, the cast includes Jeong Yu-Mi, Park Ji-Hwan, Jeon Bae-Soo, Lee Soo-Hyuk, and others.

Queen Woo airs on TVING on August 29, 2024.
