From lack of air conditioning to E. coli-filled swimming races , Olympic athletes in Paris have confronted a number of issues during this year's Summer Games. The latest snafu, however, is the result of an athlete's actions outside of the competition.

According to The Associated Press , an Australian field hockey player was arrested in Paris in the early morning hours of Aug. 7 after officers witnessed an alleged drug deal. Authorities reported that it was an athlete attempting to buy cocaine from a 17-year-old dealer.

The player was later identified by French newspaper Libération as 28-year-old Tom Craig, who was competing in his second Olympics after winning silver with his team at the Tokyo Games. "With regard to the quantities of narcotics seized from the seller, the investigations have been entrusted to the narcotics squad," police said in a statement to 9 News Australia . "Both people are in police custody."

The Australian Olympic Committee shared that no charges have been filed against the player. After he walked out of the police station in the evening of Aug. 7, Craig owned up to what happened and expressed his regret.

"I made a terrible mistake and I take full responsibility for my actions," he said. "My actions are my own and by no way reflect the values of my family, my teammates, my friends, my sport, and the Australian Olympic team."

"I've embarrassed you all," he concluded. "I'm truly sorry."

The arrest comes after the Australian men's hockey team was eliminated during the quarterfinals on Aug. 4. Whether Craig faces any other repercussions remains to be seen.
