Is Giants GM Joe Schoen Happy With Free Agent Production?

It was obvious from watching last season’s version of the New York Giants that something had to be done with the offensive line. All three starting quarterbacks for the team were injured at some point, and starter Daniel Jones was lost for the season to a torn ACL.

General manager Joe Schoen & Co. knew they had to do something to protect their $40 million quarterback. During HBO’s “Hard Knocks with the New York Giants”, Shoen was adamant that something had to be done.

The Giants then signed free agent offensive linemen Jon Runyan Jr and Jermaine Eluemunor to shore up a group that gave up a whopping 85 sacks a season ago.

Schoen also needed to replace running back Saquon Barkley, who landed with the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency. The team ultimately signed Devin Singletary to be their starting running back.

Schoen recently appeared on Good Morning Football and had nothing but good things to say about their free agent signings.

“All three of those guys, what we expected to get in terms of production and the way they look on the grass has been really good,” Schoen said. “Not only that but from a culture standpoint, who they are as people and what they bring to the table as veteran players with leadership as we’re trying to turn this around. They’ve been phenomenal.”

The Giants are hoping to take a big step forward after falling to 6-11 a season ago. Like every other team in the NFL, success or failure is 100 percent dependent upon the play of their starting quarterback.

Can Jones come back from a torn ACL and be effective? Will the Giants No. 6 overall pick Malik Nabers be the missing weapon Jons has never had? One thing is for sure, co-owner of the team John Mara expects to see results.

“I expect us to take a big step forward,” co-owner John Mara said last week. “It’s hard to articulate my expectations. I obviously want to show significant improvement over last year. But I’m not going to make any specific guarantees or demands or anything like that. But they know what I want to see.”

All the cards are on the table. The Giants kickoff their 100 ^th season and their preseason schedule Thursday night as they host the Detroit Lions at MetLife Stadium.
