The Las Vegas Raiders made a conscious decision to go after the best offensive player in the 2024 NFL Draft after they figured out they were not going to be able to get a quarterback. The top three quarterbacks in the draft were the only ones worth going for, and none of those teams felt the need to trade out of the top three. So, the Raiders went a different route.
With Aidan O'Connell already on the team, and the franchise just signing Gardner Minshew a month or so prior, the Raiders were content with going forward with those two, and just grabbing a weapon for them to make things a bit easier. But, they didn't draft just any weapon. They drafted maybe the greatest college football tight end of all time in Brock Bowers.
And, with training camp almost over now in Costa Mesa, California , the Raiders are seeing that Bowers is not only a great pick by the front office, but he's more than just your average rookie. This guy is already showing traits of possibly being an elite player in year one.
Early in camp, he had the play where he mossed a defender, and made him look silly . Now he is showing off his elite route running skills, while also being able to elevate above the defense and go and get a pass that's not entirely accurate.
The Raiders made the right decision with the hand they were dealt. They were not able to get that franchise-saver quarterback that they desperately wanted and needed, but, they got the next best thing. I can see Bowers having a huge rookie season, and, who knows if the offense is good enough for Bowers to do that, but he certainly is good enough.
If all goes well in 2024, taking Bowers at pick No. 13 could look like a genius move.
