Vince Gill has a deep catalog of music to pull from. He released his debut solo album The Things That Matter in 1985. Since then, he has released a total of 18 studio albums. Additionally, as one of the best musicians in Nashville, Gill has a massive collection of country covers in his back pocket. With that much music at his disposal, one would think it would be difficult for him to choose his favorite song to play live. However, that’s not the case.

In a 2016 interview with Southern Living, Gill shared his thoughts on many aspects of life both personal and professional. During the conversation, he revealed his favorite song to play live.

“Oh my gosh,” Vince Gill said, thinking about his favorite song to play. “Maybe ‘Whenever You Come Around.’ I wrote it for Amy [Grant] when I first met her,” he said after a pause. “I was just taken with how pretty she was and the smile she had. It’s just a song of yearning and hope. Beautiful song,” he added. “She inspired it.”

Gill co-wrote “Whenever You Come Around” with Pete Wasner and released it in April 1994 as the lead single from the album When Love Finds You. The song went to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart.

Gill met Amy Grant when they were both married to other people. However, he knew there was something special about Grant from the moment he laid eyes on her. “When I met Amy years ago, I was just completely taken with her smile. We were doing a TV show together, and she walked in and smiled at me. I haven’t been the same since,” Gill said during an All for the Hall event in 2016.

Not long after writing the song, he got the chance to co-write with Grant. “She asked me to play her something that I was working on for my new record. So, I played her the song I wrote about her, and didn’t tell her,” Gill recalled. “She listened to it and said, ‘Oh that’s nice. That’s really beautiful.’ Years and years and years later, she said, ‘I remember listening to that song for the first time and all I could think was who is the lucky girl that that song was written for?’” he added.
