Jets activate Mike Williams from PUP list in big boost for offense

The Jets offense took another step toward becoming complete Wednesday when wide receiver Mike Williams was activated off the physically unable to perform list, making him eligible for a training camp debut.

Williams, who has missed the first two-plus weeks of camp recovering from a torn ACL suffered last season, signed a one-year deal worth up to $15 million in March to become Gang Green’s No. 2 receiver behind Garrett Wilson and provide another target for Aaron Rodgers.

After the PUP transaction, Williams can practice as early as Thursday, when the Jets host the Commanders in a joint session, but it’s unclear how the Jets will handle Williams’ workload as he continues to build toward normalcy.

When asked about Williams earlier this week, Jets coach Robert Saleh said the 29-year-old was on a similar timeline to the one Jets running back Breece Hall followed last year when recovering from an ACL tear — a process that ultimately resulted in Hall getting activated from the PUP list Aug. 15 and appearing in the Week 1 lineup.

“We’ll see,” Saleh said about Williams’ looming practice return Tuesday, 24 hours before that outlook became significantly more concrete. “I know he’s got a couple doctors visits coming up, but right now, he’s just progressing.”

Williams, a former first-round pick who spent the first seven years of his career with the Chargers, caught 19 passes for 249 yards and a touchdown before the season-ending injury in Week 3.

He topped 1,000 yards in 2019 and 2021, and after signing with the Jets, he said he felt they were a “great fit” for him , especially the opportunity to play alongside Wilson — who reminded Williams of longtime Chargers star Keenan Allen.

“I feel like we can complement each other,” Williams said of Wilson in March. “The running game is pretty good. The defense is elite. I just feel like we’ve got a pretty good opportunity ahead of us. I’m just looking forward to it.”

Today’s Iconic Moment in New York Sports: Jets land Brett Favre

Tyrod Taylor has seen a little bit of everything in the NFL.

The Jets are his seventh different team. He has started and made the Pro Bowl, been a backup and made the playoffs — the kinds of twists and turns a lengthy career, entering its 14th season in 2024, will inevitably produce.

But as Taylor navigates his first camp with Gang Green, he still embraces the opportunity to learn behind Rodgers and incorporate some of that insight — such as “mannerisms at the line” of scrimmage and what Rodgers will search for on the field — into work with the No. 2 offense.

“I approach each and every day with trying to learn something and every day that I’m around him is an opportunity to learn,” Taylor said. “I’m impressed by a lot, but I’m more impressed with just his leadership and how … he takes command. Whether it’s a walkthrough, whether it’s a practice, his attention to detail goes a long way.”

Saleh said the Jets would know more on Thursday about the status of safety Ashtyn Davis and OL Chris Glaser, who both exited Tuesday’s practice early.

With their session Wednesday, originally open to fans, canceled due to weather, the Jets held a walkthrough after initially planning for a light practice.

“Our guys could use a walkthrough to get their legs back,” Saleh said.

The Jets released WR Hamze El-Zayat and signed RB Deon Jackson, who spent the 2023 season with the Colts, Giants, and Browns.
