Dachshund Goes All In on Her 'Contentment Ceremony' to Show How Much She Loved Her Food

Dogs may not be able to communicate using human language, but they find plenty of ways to tell us what they're thinking (and what they want) anyway. Though each dog will have their own individual ways of communicating with their favorite humans, in general, there are a few signs they can give us that we will immediately understand. Wagging their tails usually means they're happy. Jumping on us usually means they want attention. But there are so many other clues they give us, too.

Apparently, one of those clues is something dogs do called a "contentment ceremony," and this TikTok video is the most adorable example of what this looks like. Your dog has probably done this before, and you had no idea!

On Sunday, April 4, @digitdax shared footage of what their Dachshund pup does after he eats: he snuggles around in his bed, moving around and rubbing his head all over it, apparently to share how much he appreciated the meal.

"Did you know... some dogs take part in something called a contentment ceremony when they've really enjoyed their food? They basically roll around to show you how much they enjoyed it!" the OP wrote.

If that's true, then this little dog loved his food a lot .

While some commenters wrote that they thought this behavior was just their dogs wiping their faces after eating, others thought it was really cute.

"Not me fussing at my dog for making my bed smell like sardines during his contentment ceremony!" one person wrote.

Another added, "Recently changed my Dachshund's food and he does this almost every time after he eats. Glad to know he loves it."

Think of it as your dog saying, "thank you!"

    What Is a Contentment Ceremony?

Dog psychologist Stanley Coren coined the term in his book, How To Speak Dog Mastering the Art of Dog-Human Communication , identifying it as behavior that your dog takes part in to show you that they're happy by rubbing their muzzle on something. How sweet is that?

But like that one commenter pointed out, sometimes they truly are cleaning their faces, so if you catch your dog rubbing their face on the ground for awhile when they aren't acting happy about something, they may need a hand getting those crumbs off their face!

Of course, there's nothing wrong with your dog if they don't tend to take part in this contentment ceremony (and it doesn't necessarily mean they didn't enjoy their food, either). I'm sure they'll find plenty of other ways to show you how much they appreciate you!
