Just hours after she made Olympic history in Paris, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the gold-medal match for her failure to make weight. The Team India star weighed in "a few grams" over the 50kg weight class, making her ineligible to participate in the championship match.

Phogat was about 100 grams overweight — the equivalent of about 0.22 pounds or 3.5 ounces. She was subsequently hospitalized for "severe dehydration" following her disqualification, according to a report from the Washington Post.

Phogat was the first woman wrestler to reach a gold-medal match in her country's history. While she was initially guaranteed at least silver heading into Wednesday's championship match against Team USA's Sarah Hildebrandt, she now finishes dead last as a disqualified athlete.

U.S. wrestling legend Jordan Burroughs called the disqualification "tragic."

"Wrestling needs MORE than six weight classes! After three tough matches against world class opponents, no athlete should have to spend the night preparing for a Gold medal in this manner," Burroughs wrote in a post on X. " Absolute desperation from the Indian team trying to get the last bit of weight off of Vinesh to qualify for today’s final."

Hildebrandt ultimately won gold in a 3-0 sweep over Cuba's Yusneylys Guzmán in the gold-medal match.
