The Los Angeles Chargers have officially added Luis Perez as their fifth quarterback on the roster. Instead of parting ways with one of the quarterbacks already on the team, such as undrafted player Casey Bauman, the team let go of undrafted outside linebacker Savion Jackson.
The Chargers are the 10th professional team Perez will have played for in his career and he faces long odds to make the team. Those were the same odds facing Jackson, an undrafted player out of North Carolina State.
Jackson played in 48 games for the Wolfpack and had 3.5 sacks in college. The team felt like he was the most expendable player on the 90-man roster and he will now look for a new opportunity elsewhere.
Chargers release their first depth chart ahead of the 2024 season
The team's first depth chart is out and Perez will start as the No. 5 QB in what remains of training camp and the preseason. The Chargers will play their first preseason game on Saturday against the Seattle Seahawks.
It remains to be seen if Perez will get into the action in that game.
As for the defensive line position, the Chargers still have plenty at the position and that is what made Jackson the player to be released.
The Chargers have Nick Bosa and Khalil Mack, one of the best duos in the league. Tuli Tuipolotu and Bud Dupree are terrific No. 3 and No. 4 guys and then Chris Rumph II, Ty Shelby, Andrew Farmer II, Tre'Mon Morris-Brash and Chris Collins are still there to compete for roster spots.
