Rafael Nadal will not participate in this year's U.S. Open, the all-time great tennis legend announced in a social media post on Wednesday.

Nadal's decision to withdraw marks his third missed Grand Slam of the season.

The 38-year-old tennis star says his next on-court appearance will be for Berlin's Laver Cup September 20-22.

"Hi all, writing today to let you guys know that I have decided not to compete at this year’s US Open a place where I have amazing memories," Nadal wrote on X. "I will miss those electric and special night sessions in NYC at Ashe, but I don’t think I would be able to give my 100% this time. Thanks to all my US Fans in particular, will miss you all and will see you another time. Best of lucks to all for the always amazing US Open! My next event will be the Laver Cup in Berlin."

Nadal most recently took the court for the Paris Olympic Games at Roland Garros. He lost in the doubles quarterfinals alongside fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, then in the second round of the singles singles tournament to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

Nadal hinted at his withdrawal from the U.S. Open after his Olympic campaign.

"Looks like not. But I'm going to let you know soon," he said. "For me, now, I can't give you a clear answer. I need some time, but for me, [it] looks difficult."

Nadal underwent hip surgery in 2023 and has dealt with abdominal muscle issues throughout the 2024 season. He says he doesn't think he could play at "100%" if he took the court in New York later this month.

    Nadal is a four-time U.S. Open champion, winning in 2010, 2013, 2017 and 2019.
