The Olympic beach semifinals are set, and four teams are still standing on both the men's and women's sides for a shot at gold.
On the women's side, there will be no American team in the semifinals after the duo of Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes were beaten in a close match by the Switzerland team of Nina Brunner and Tanja Hüberli.
Switzerland will take on the Canadian team featuring Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson in the semifinals.
The top-ranked Brazilian women's team of Ana Patricia Silva Ramos and Eduarda Santos Lisboa will face Australian pair Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy, who won silver in Tokyo.
On the men's side, with Miles Partain and Andy Benesh of the U.S. falling to Qatar in the quarterfinals, no American team will compete for a medal in beach volleyball in Paris. This is the first American medal shutout since the sport joined the Summer Games in 1996.
Instead, Qatar, who won bronze in Tokyo with their duo of Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan, will take on David Ahman and Jonatan Hellvig of Sweden.
The other semifinal will feature defending men's champions Anders Bernsten Mol and Christian Sandlie Sorum of Norway against Germany's Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler.
