A PARAGUAYAN football team narrowly escaped ELECTROCUTION after winning their first league title in nearly 100 years.

Libertad de Pirayu claimed their first Pirayutense crown in 94 years last Saturday with a 5-4 shootout victory over Club Cerro Porteno Taba'i.

Libertad, understandably, organised an open-top bus parade to celebrate their monumental achievement.

They jubilantly celebrated on board the bus, waving flags and jumping up and down with the trophy.

But the celebrations almost ended in tragedy when the trophy got stuck in overhead POWER CABLES.

Footage of the almost fatal incident went viral and showed the trophy sparking as it hung from the power lines.

Locals tried to prod the sparking trophy from his electric perch with a long stick-like object.

And the man holding the item made sure to wear rubber gloves and rubber-soled shoes to ensure he didn't get electrocuted.

Footage of the incident went viral, with one viewer saying: " Yikes!!!

"I hope that the Cup has some cool scorch marks on it that people talk about for the next 100 years."

Another said: "Add that one to the job hazard analysis."

    And another said: "No way."

One remarked: "And here I always thought the Stanley Cup was the most electrifying trophy to win in all of sports."

Another chimed in: "Electrifying celebrations of the day."

Libertad de Pirayu president Juan Carlos Romero said: "We were scared after what happened, everything was a party.

"But suddenly in the blink of an eye, we heard the sound of sparks and then we saw that the cup was hanging by the cable.

"We all remained silent, it gave us quite a scare.

"It was a lucky accident, I was there and I had to duck, otherwise the cup would have fallen on my head.

"I think the Virgin of Caacupe gave us her hand, because yesterday we went to the basilica and on the way back we made the caravan, the Virgin illuminated us at that moment.
