Paramount has shared a major update on Taylor Sheridan ‘s newest installment to the Yellowstone universe.

Oscar-nominated actress Michelle Pfeiffer is set to star in and executive produce the new spin-off series Madison , described as “a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana.”

Paramount Global Co-CEO  Chris McCarthy praised the actress in a press release share with DECIDER, saying, “Michelle Pfeiffer is a remarkable talent who imbues every role with emotional depth, authenticity and grace. She is the perfect anchor to the newest chapter of the Yellowstone universe, Madison , from the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan.”

Pfeiffer will be joining the same team of executive producers who helped Sheridan bring Yellowstone to life, including David C. Glasser, John Linson , Art Linson, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin, Christina Voros, Michael Friedman and Keith Cox.

Previous reports about the spin-off series, which was tentatively titled 2024 at the time, described it to be a “present-day story” that will continue exploring the Dutton family after the end of Yellowstone through new characters and locations.

McCarthy teased that Madison and 1944 , which was described as a prequel series, “will take audiences on a thrilling, new and unexpected journey with the complex and compelling storytelling that has become a hallmark of the franchise,” per The Hollywood Reporter .

Pfeiffer has long been rumored to be one of the stars in consideration for Sheridan’s new series. Matthew McConaughey was also reportedly in talks to star in a spinoff series, though it’s unclear if he will be joining Pfeiffer in Madison or helming his own story.

Sheridan shared in a 2023 interview that he and McConaughey had “spitballed a few ideas” about how the actor could join the Yellowstone universe . What they found was that McConaughey was most interested in “diving into a raw world clashing up against the modern world,” which sounds quite similar to the few details we know about Madison .

“There are lots of places where a way of life that existed for 150 years is slamming against a new way of life, but the challenges are completely different. There are a lot of places you can tell this story,” Sheridan said at the time. He noted that the actor was “a natural fit” for the franchise.

Madison and 1944 will be continuing the Yellowstone legacy after the show comes to an end in November.

With the addition of these new stars, there is one star Yellowstone fans will no longer be seeing more of: Kevin Costner . Despite rumors claiming Costner and Sheridan were having issues behind-the-scenes, Costner cited the show’s heavy delays as his reason for exiting the franchise early. “We very rarely started when we said we would and we didn’t finish when we said we would,” he said . “And I was okay with that. I really was. I was okay with it, but it wasn’t a trend that could continue for me.”

Yellowstone will return for Season 5, Part 2 without Costner Nov. 10 at 8/7C.
