Amite man arrested in Hammond drug investigation

HAMMOND, La. ( WGNO ) — An Amite man has been arrested after police allegedly saw him exchanging in a drug transaction on Saturday, Aug. 24.

According to the Hammond Police Department, detectives with their narcotics division conducted an investigation during the Hot August Stroll event. During the nighttime hours, detectives reportedly saw what looked like a drug transaction that was occurring in front of a local bar.

Detectives then made contact with the suspected dealer, 55-year-old Ronald Thomas, and allegedly found multiple bags of suspected cocaine as well as a glass smoking device with suspected marijuana inside.

Officers learned that Thomas had a vehicle parked at a nearby address. A search warrant was executed on the vehicle and detectives reportedly found a Canik 9mm handgun with a loaded magazine and holster, suspected crack cocaine, suspected Adderall pills, a glass pipe and a box of sandwich bags.

It was later discovered that Thomas is a convicted felon, and he was booked accordingly.
