Niskayuna native appointed 39th Troop G Commander

ALBANY, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — Major Christopher Gilroy was named the 39th Troop Commander of Troop G, previously serving as Captain and Commander of the Troop G Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The Niskayuna native entered the New York State Police Academy in May 1998 and completed his field training in Troop B upon graduation.

Gilroy graduated with a degree in sociology from the University at Albany in 1998 before entering the New York State Police.

Gilroy’s first permanent assignment was Troop F with Ellenville State Police and later transferred to Troop G, working with Wilton and Mayfield State Police. In 2004, he was promoted to Investigator in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and assigned to the Community Narcotics Enforcement Team (CNET). He stayed in the position for 14 years.

As an investigator assigned to CNET, he spent roughly eight years assigned to the Drug Enforcement Task Force (DETF) as a federally deputized Task Force Officer. In 2009, he obtained the permanent rank of Sergeant and remained in the assignment to CNET as an investigator until being promoted to lieutenant in 2015.

Gilroy played a crucial role in overseeing investigative operations and ensured the effective handling of complex criminal cases. Following his time at Troop B, also having worked as a uniform lieutenant for the Division of Traffic Services, he took the position of CNET Regional Lieutenant for the Captial Region.

Gilroy was promoted to Captain and served as a Troop G BCI lieutenant. He was promoted in 2021.
