Foodie Friday: BP Smokehouse serves up award-winning barbecue in Tomah

TOMAH, Wis. (WKBT) -- Every week for Foodie Friday, we talk in-studio with the businesspeople and culinary artisans behind outstanding area restaurants, bakeries, cafes, bars, food trucks, and more.

We want to help our viewers get in touch with the dynamic food scene of the greater Coulee Region while also supporting local, independent businesses.

This week, News 8 Now This Morning 's Alexandra Carter spoke with Darren Price, co-owner of BP Smokehouse in Tomah .

Darren, an Army veteran and retired law enforcement officer, operates the business with his wife, Myra, who also served in the military.

In addition to serving up delicious meals like the pulled pork Darren brought to our studio, BP Smokehouse produces its own line of sauce and other barbecue products.

"BP Smokehouse is a barbecue restaurant, and also a sauce and rub company," Darren said.

Their sauce is highly acclaimed, having been entered in barbecue competitions across 35 states and 7 countries. In 2020, it took 3rd place in the "Mild Tomato" category at the American Royal World Series of Barbecue Sauce Contest in Kansas City.

The News 8 Now This Morning team tried both the meat and the sauce, and we can confirm that Darren's award-winning record is well-deserved.

BP Smokehouse also provides catering services and cooking classes.

"Our catering business is pretty extensive. We do groups as small as 30 and as large as 4,000 [...] also I give barbecue cooking classes because there really are no secrets to barbeque, it's a discipline, like anything else, and you just get good at it by doing it a lot," Darren told Alexandra.
