New expanded medical facility provides more treatment for animals at Coulee Region Humane Society

ONALASKA, Wis. (WKBT) -- Dogs and cats waiting for new homes won't have to travel far to get vaccinated, neutered or have surgery. Coulee Region Humane Society can now do it all in house.

"Most of the animals around here, they cannot handle the quantity of animals that need spays and neuters. Having this internal facility gives us the opportunity to do that right here and not have to transport them to different locations," executive director Heather Drievold said.

Before, the new facility treatment was done in a small room and animals sometimes needed to be sent to clinics. Now there's more space and the animals can be monitored more closely.

"It doesn't take away our volunteer time for transporting those animals and it doesn't stress the animal out by getting them into a carrier, putting them in a vehicle, traveling thirty minutes away," Drievold said.

The shelter raised $3.5 million for the expansion. Most of the money came from donations. With more dogs and cats able to get treated internally, Drievold is confident they will be adopted sooner.

"We've found adopters are much more likely to adopt when the animal comes medically sound," Drievold said.

"When we can say this dog is spayed, neutered, this dog is microchipped, it is vaccinated--it's just more mind settling for folks that are taking on animals so that they're not jumping in and having to add a whole bunch of medical regimes with their own veterinarian."
