What is this new Content Value (CV) Score?

Many of you have probably noticed a new column added to your published articles, “CV Score.” While we included an announcement and brief explanation on the Creator Portal as to what it is, you probably still have some questions about what this really means for your content moving forward and also how it can affect your earnings.

First, why did we add this score? A lot of things have happened in the last few months: we launched the News Break Creator Network, it grew by the hundreds, and you started producing thousands of pieces of content on a wide variety of topics. We’ve loved seeing it grow, but we also wanted to create an effective way to align more content with our mission of connecting and empowering local users and communities. The Content Value Score was developed to help feature and reward quality, original, diverse and local content.

The most important factor being taken into consideration for our current* CV Score is localization. We’ve said it once, but we’ll say it again because it is that important. News Break was founded with the mission of helping people live safer, more vibrant, more truly connected lives by connecting local users with local news, local content creators and local businesses. There is nothing that will instantly improve your CV scores more than moving away from broad, general topics and issues, and focusing on local content that resonates with your community. We do not mean simply adding a U.S. city to your headline or creating one line in the article about your town; we mean really getting to know your local communities and telling stories that matter to them.

An article’s length and readability matter. While word count is not the most important factor, it does matter for CV score and optimization. Quality is obviously important, but generally speaking, an article that is 600+ words works better for recommendations and optimization on News Break. (These factors will not all be the same for video creators, and we will be coming out with a separate list of guidelines for videos.)

It’s important that articles are accurate and clear. While it can be useful to write from your own experience and perspective, all other information taken from other people or places must be sourced and attributed. However, this doesn’t mean you can simply rewrite other people’s words with attribution; articles must be original. Each piece of content should contain clear, helpful information for the reader and should leave the reader more informed on the topic or issue presented. Also, accuracy means no misleading or click-bait headlines.

We value content that is scarce and unique. We are looking to support diverse content that reflects our user base’s varied interests and needs. You can make almost any piece of content unique by looking into a different perspective, focusing on a local angle or honing in on a specific issue. We encourage you to write content that is both interesting and original.

Lastly, style makes a difference. Great writing can’t be beat, but style matters too. Adding quality images, multimedia, and other graphics help content perform better on our platform and across other sites. Also, breaking up long paragraphs and bolding key words or sentences make a big difference in overall style and appearance.

Each CV score for published, qualifying articles is directly related to sign-on base pay and ad revenue share in our new monetization terms. (You can find the new terms under the Monetization tab on the Creator Portal.)

So have fun, get creative and write local, we can’t wait to see what you publish!

*The Content Value (CV) Score is an evolving metric that can change as we expand and learn more about the content and our users’ interests and needs.
