News Break's #StopAsianHate content campaign

Supporting the Asian community through storytelling

The Atlanta-area shooting spree last week that killed eight people, including six women of Asian descent, has increased public awareness on the dangers of anti-Asian sentiment and violence across the country. Over the past year, attacks on Asians in the United States have increased. Stop AAPI Hate has documented nearly 3,800 hate incidents from March 19, 2020 to February 28, 2021.

At News Break, it pains us to see hatred and acts of violence towards (Asian American and Pacific Islander) AAPI communities. Our goal has always been to bring people together and help them connect with their local communities. There is no room or tolerance for racism of any kind. We want to do our part to stand in solidarity and also support the AAPI community to #StopAsianHate.

This week, we are launching the News Break #StopAsianHate content campaign to uplift Asian American voices and stories. We will also be donating to organizations and funds that directly support AAPI communities.

Campaign requirements*

• You must be an approved News Break Creator
• You must publish a local story on News Break about how your community is helping to fight against Asian hate
• Every story must include the hashtag #StopAsianHate at the end of the piece (content published without the hashtag will not be eligible for selection)
• Content must be original and must be published first on News Break
• The content shall be free of sponsorship by a third party and cannot contain any promotions or solicitations - Including a link to an organization or group that you mention in the story is acceptable, but we are not looking for listicles of places to donate or donation links
• All stories must be submitted to us by 8 a.m. PT Monday, March 29, 2021

Types of stories accepted

We want to share uplifting, solution-based local stories that can help inspire change and bring communities together. We are not looking for stories featuring criminal acts or viral videos for this campaign (no breaking news, please). Here are some examples of the types of stories we are looking for:

• She publishes booklets in seven languages to help Asian Americans and others face hate crimes
• UCLA’s Natalie Chou wants to make a difference for Asian Americans
• A Baltimore restaurant owner drove 6 hours to cook a favorite meal for a terminally ill customer
• Echo Park Chinese restaurant stays loyal to its community
• 'Just loving each other': Warner Robins business owner sees support from all over the US after shootings at Atlanta spas
• Hundreds of people are volunteering to escort elderly Asian Americans to help keep them safe
• UCF students help local Asian community heal after rise in violent attacks in US

Featured story selection

• Featured stories will be selected by News Break’s Editorial Team and announced daily around 9 a.m. PT, the week of March 29 - April 2, 2021
• Each selected story will be heavily promoted on our platform and through our social media accounts
• We will select up to five stories during this campaign
• If your story is selected, you will be provided an opportunity to choose an AAPI organization or fund, to which News Break will make a one-time donation of $1,000. Selected creators can choose from one of these organizations or suggest their own**:

Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Stop AAPI Hate, Asian Pacific Fund, Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum

* You must further comply with our Terms of Use, Privacy Policy, and News Break Creator Content Requirements, to the extent that those requirements have not been altered by the Campaign requirements

If News Break is unable to donate to the suggested organization, the Creator will need to select an organization from the approved list in order to complete the donation.
