A slow-moving frontal boundary will drop south across the region today and tomorrow, triggering showers and storms today and an area of rain on Tuesday. This boundary extends west to east roughly across Lake Ontario this morning. An area of rain and storms over Canada has moved out over the northern waters of Lake Ontario. This area of precipitation is expected to stay out over the lake until it passes east of the Finger Lakes.

After a period of hot and humid weather where heat indices reached triple digits in some locations, we welcome cooler than normal temperatures for the next several days. It is still summer, though, so sweaters, mittens, and scarves will not be necessary! There were a few temperature records broken over the August 5-6, 2024, period, but surprisingly none otherwise across Indiana. What a nice reminder that we are usually hot and humid this time of year! In fact, the July 2024 average daily temperature (as well as the average daily maximum and minimum temperatures) were very close to normal. Does this mean global climate change is not real? Absolutely not! The key word there is “global” and while the average temperatures for the month were near normal, the variability and extremes illustrate how much the atmosphere has been agitated.

Dew points will be slowly coming down today but they will still be on the high side into the afternoon. Look for decreasing clouds and increasing sunshine from west to east on this Saturday. High temperatures will be mostly in the lower 80s. Some warmer spots to the south could push it to 84 or 85 for a high. Dew points will be settling in the upper 50s to lower 60s by the end of the day. We have no issues with showers as the radars are going to be nice and quiet locally for awhile.

Gov. Ron DeSantis has issued a state of emergency in Northeast Florida and across much of the state as a tropical system appears almost certain to develop. The National Hurricane Center said Friday morning that a tropical wave has a 90% chance of developing into at least a tropical depression over the next seven days. Most models show it moving into the Gulf of Mexico and then coming ashore and crossing the state, possibly moving over Northeast Florida.

And it seems like the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a climate pattern in the tropical Pacific Ocean that can affect weather across the world, is no exception. Tropical Storm Debby has made a second landfall in South Carolina this morning. The storm will move inland and begin to accelerate up the east coast later Thursday into Friday. As Debby moves up the coast, it will interact with a trough moving out of the Great Lakes, eventually merging with that system's cold front. This will bring a period of heavy rain to western New England, with lesser amounts and less time in the rain heading farther east and south in New England.
