Many iconic engines have appeared multiple times on the list since its inception in 1994.

When it comes to building engines, one philosophy is that the bigger, the better. Six cylinders? Why not eight? Ten? Twelve? Another philosophy is to work smarter, not harder. If you can get supercar specs out of six cylinders, why drag the car down with all that extra aluminum and cast iron? Track records are frequently made and broken on a difference of 100 pounds of curb weight, and with how much juice you can get out of turbochargers and electric motors these days, it's no wonder some of the quickest cars in the world have some of the leanest engines.

For Ford fans, the performance years of the 1960s brought one advancement after another, and that time line begins with Ford’s assault at Indy in 1963 with its DOHC V-8 based on the small-block Windsor. Meanwhile, Ford’s “big-block”—the FE engine family—which began modestly in 1958 at 332-, 352-, and 360-cubic-inch displacements—had by the time of this story grown to 427 cubes and would power Ford to wins at Le Mans in 1966 and 1967. The subject of Eric Dahlquist’s original story, the 427-ci SOHC “Cammer,” was based on the FE and showed what could be done quickly within the warrens of Ford powertrain. At the time, it was unknown whether the engine would see production in factory-built cars (it wouldn’t), but for a short time the hemi-headed cammer would please crowds in A/FX cars built by Holman & Moody and Bill Stroppe Engineering before becoming a darling in the nitro-fueled ranks in front of drivers like Don Prudhomme, Connie Kalitta, Jack Chrisman, and Don Nicholson. —Johnny Hunkins.

A 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 driven by the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio will soon be available to car collectors with deep pockets. The Mercedes race car is one of several from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum collection that will be sold by RM Sotheby's throughout 2024 and 2025. Proceeds from the sales will help fund the museum, according to a press release. With an estimated sale price of $50 million to $70 million, the W196 will certainly contribute to that goal.
