A 12-year-old Texas cheerleader died Monday, four days after she suffered mysterious “life-threatening” injuries that her parents tried to treat with smoothies and vitamins, authorities announced Wednesday. 

Jourdanton Junior High School student Miranda Sipps died in the hospital Monday night after her mother finally called for help when the preteen went into respiratory distress, the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office said.

The girl’s mother, Denise Balbaneda, and stepfather, Gerald Gonzalez, 40, were arrested for failing to seek medical help sooner for the girl during the four days while she was “mentally and physically incapacitated and non-responsive,” the sheriff said.

The new school year got off to a catastrophic start for a young Florida girl who was accidentally run over by her mother’s SUV during morning drop-off, officials said.

The 12-year-old girl was struck at around 7:45 a.m. after she dropped her backpack, and some of her belongings rolled under her mom’s Lincoln Navigator outside Booker Middle School in Sarasota, Florida, Highway Patrol Trooper Kenn Watson told ABC Action News. 

Unbeknownst to her mother, the preteen crawled under the SUV on her hands and knees to gather her things when her mother began to drive away.

A man out on probation for drug charges less than a year ago and a woman from Douglas were recently arrested following a search at a local apartment. On August 7, 2024, at around 1:00 PM, Detectives from the Coffee County Sheriff's Office Drug Unit were conducting a proactive narcotics patrol in Douglas. During their patrol, a detective spotted 30-year-old Christopher Lamar Hawkins, who had outstanding warrants for fleeing police and methamphetamine possession, driving a white 2021 Kia Sorento. Hawkins was stopped in front of apartment 203/204 on N Wheeler Ave, where two detectives approached him. Breanna Henderson, 33, then came out of apartment 203 to "investigate what was going on with Hawkins" and appeared to whisper with Hawkins during his arrest. The report states that Henderson, who temporarily lived with Hawkins, began whispering with him "presumably about nefarious activities due to Hawkins's previous history with drug distribution and evading law enforcement."
