Swimming up a classification, Perales qualified sixth for finals with a 2:05.53, torching Iryna Sotska’s record from 2012 by 25.32 seconds. She joins a final that includes top qualifier Leanne Smith, the Tokyo silver medallist, and Rachel Watson, who broke the Oceanian record in 1:37.84 to qualify third overall.

LCM (50 meters) Several Paralympic Records fell during day 5 prelims at the 2024 Paralympic Games, setting up for an exciting night of finals action. Competing in the Women’s S13 50m Freestyle, S12 Brazilian star Maria Carolina Gomes Santiago was the top qualifier in the event, besting swimmers a class above her. Gomes Santiago posted a time of 26.71, breaking her own S12 Paralympic Record. She already holds the World Record in the event as well as she swam a time of 26.61 back in May, a time that could certainly be in jeopardy during finals.

With 48 Paralympic and 14 World Records set through the half-way point of the competition, the 2024 Paralympic Games have been full of excitement. Through day 6, Great Britain continues to hold a lead on the medal table with 14 golds, 4 silvers, and 2 bronze medals, combining for 20 medals overall. China and Italy also continue to hold strong, but the US has finally pushed into 4th after earning 2 gold medals on Day 6, bringing their total to 6 gold, 8 silver, 1 bronze, and 15 total medals.

Schools throughout the Kanawha Valley are sharing their condolences with family and friends of 13-year-old Cohen Craddock. Students and staff at Nitro High School were asked to wear red and black -- Madison Middle School's team colors -- on Monday in Craddock's memory. During my childhood, when my family visited relatives “across the river,” in Bayou Plaquemine, Bayou Goula, Caddo, the Pointe, and White Castle, my siblings and I would sometimes race up and down the levees, some distance away from the cows grazing there. At the summit of the hill, you could see the Mississippi River waters through stands of trees and brush. It never occurred to me that our “playground” was the living testimony of Black men, prisoners of the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola whom the state of Louisiana had re-enslaved in the convict leasing system.
