Layoffs surge in Georgia as businesses announce upcoming job cuts

Georgia is feeling the sting of a growing wave of layoffs, with numerous companies issuing WARN notices to announce upcoming job cuts across the state. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires employers with over 100 full-time workers to give a 60-day heads-up before laying off 50 or more employees at a single site, and it seems like this requirement is getting a lot of use lately.

The latest company to join the list is GEODIS, a transport, logistics, and supply management giant. They’ve just filed a WARN notice with the Georgia Department of Labor, revealing that 68 employees in McDonough will soon be out of a job. Positions affected include operators, warehouse auditors, and team leads. GEODIS is also making cuts in Pennsylvania, with 107 jobs being eliminated at their warehouse there.

But GEODIS isn’t alone. Here's a rundown of other companies making significant layoffs in Georgia this year:

• DHL Supply Chain: Cutting 211 jobs in Fairburn and McDonough.
• Advanced Pro Services: Laying off 65 employees in Atlanta.
• Pitney Bowes: Also reducing staff in Atlanta.
• WestRock: Issued a WARN notice for layoffs at their Duluth office.
• Flambeau: Closing its Madison plant, leading to 89 job cuts.
• Walmart: Shutting down stores in Dunwoody and Marietta, affecting 295 and 92 employees, respectively.
• Atlanta Attachment Company: Eliminating 57 positions in Lawrenceville.
• Chemical Products Corporation: Cutting 122 jobs in Cartersville.
• ZF Active Safety: Reducing its workforce by 365 in Flowery Branch.

These layoffs represent a significant shift for many workers, impacting a wide range of industries from logistics to retail. As companies streamline their operations and navigate economic pressures, the ripple effect is being felt across the state.
