WELDON, N.C. (WNCN) — Two people were busted in Halifax County last week after deputies spotted a woman hiding a container of crack cocaine by stuffing it down her pants, officials said.

The incident began Wednesday around 11 a.m. when deputies were using radar to check for speeding drivers along the 4000 block of U.S. 301 in Weldon, according to a news release from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy clocked a car driving at 69 mph in the 55 mph zone and stopped the car, deputies said.

As the deputy spoke with the driver and passenger the deputy “could smell the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle,” the release said.

The two people were told to get out of the car so deputies could search it, officials said.

At that point, the deputy “observed the passenger return briefly to the vehicle grabbing a clear container and stuff it down her pants,” the release said.

The container, with powder cocaine and crack cocaine inside, was seized by authorities, officials said. Marijuana was also seized from inside the car.

The driver, Jeffery Brown of Gaston, and passenger, Shonta Mangrum of Emporia, Virginia, were both arrested and charged, deputies said.

Both were charged with felony possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana up to one-half ounce, and possession of marijuana paraphernalia, officials said.

Brown was also cited for speeding and driving while license revoked.

They received a $5,000 bond and have a court date set for August 29.
