MEMPHIS, Tenn. ( WREG ) — A man shot in Memphis, Tennessee, on Tuesday night escaped the gunman on a garbage truck, and police are still looking for the shooter, who was caught on video firing at the truck.

Officers responding to reports of a shooting around 5 p.m. found a man lying in the road suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

A witness told police he was inside his home when he heard multiple gunshots outside. He saw a man with a semiautomatic pistol shooting at the victim as he was running down the road.

A Memphis city garbage truck was driving through the neighborhood while the shooting was happening. The victim jumped onto the side of the garbage truck and screamed at the driver to drive away, according to police.

The suspect continued to shoot at the garbage truck as it fled, hitting it multiple times.

Reports say the garbage truck stopped at an intersection and the victim rolled off the truck and onto the ground.

Several Ring cameras in the area caught the shooting on video.

Police said that just before shots were heard, the suspect and victim were seen talking in the driveway at a home. During the conversation, the suspect pulled out a semiautomatic pistol and began shooting at the victim.

The shooter was seen leaving the area in a blue Nissan Altima. Investigators identified the license plate number and traced it to an address. The homeowner at the address claimed the car was owned by his son, who was immediately taken into custody, a police report stated.

However, the Memphis Police Department posted a video of the shooting to its Facebook account Wednesday afternoon, stating it was still looking for the suspect and the blue Nissan Altima.
