JASPER — Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler said that on July 11, Newton County Sheriff’s Office was notified of an abandoned truck on a county road off Highway 74 East between Jasper and Piercetown. A deputy responded to the area and located the truck still in the county road, but pulled to one side so traffic could squeeze by. The truck was locked and nothing appeared out of the ordinary other than the location. The deputy checked the area around the truck and spoke with people in the area, but was unable to find anyone associated with it. The deputy had the truck towed and then entered into a nationwide law enforcement computer network as impounded.
Military brings no-cost medical services to north Arkansas
Military personnel are providing no-cost medical, optometry, dental and veterinary services through July 25 at clinics in Jasper and Kingston as part of a training mission. The U.S. Department of Defense is partnering with the Northwest Arkansas Economic Development District to present Ozark Wellness Innovative Readiness Training. IRT missions, which can also focus on things like civil engineering, cybersecurity and transportation, provide training opportunities to increase soldiers’ deployment readiness while providing key services to U.S. communities, according to the Department of Defense’s website.

Officials meet with residents on working together to reduce opioid overdose deaths
The University of Arkansas System’s Criminal Justice Institute (CJI) held an opioid overdose prevention community roundtable Thursday, June 27, at the Newton County Senior Activity and Wellness Center in Jasper. The noon meeting brought local residents together with officials and professionals directly involved in reducing the number of deaths in an on-going opioid overdose crisis in Arkansas. The discussion was made possible through grant funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
Town hall meeting explains proposed Drug Free Community grant
The Newton County Hometown Health Initiative (HHI) created a subcommittee called Partnership in Prevention (PIP) which proposed submitting an application for a federal CDC Drug Free Community (DFC) grant. That application was submitted last April and the announcement of grants awarded is expected to come in August. To inform the public what the grant would mean to Newton County, a town hall meeting was held Tuesday afternoon, June 25, at the Jasper School Cafeteria.
