NEWTON, NJ – The road that was closed because of a sink hole next to the Green in Newton has been reopened.  New Jersey Department of Transportation installed a metal plate over the area to allow traffic to flow while they decide on a plan to fix the issue, according to Newton Police Chief Steven VanNieuwland.

A camera was used to look through the pipe near the sink hole and “nothing unusual was found,” according to VanNieuwland.

“It appears the soil may have been improperly compacted after recent construction in the area, leading to soil settlement and the formation of a sink hole,” the chief said.

The timeline for the final repair has not been announced.

On Tuesday morning a hole in the pavement was discovered by Newton Police Officers in the roadway next to the Green.  The section of road that connects Spring Street and Route 94/206 was closed until the temporary plate was put in place.
