Letter to the editor: America should be ashamed at lack of progress against gun violence

The Newtown mass shooting resulted in 20 children and six adults killed, the Uvalde school shooting had 19 children and two teachers killed, the Las Vegas concert shooting had 60 people killed and 413 wounded, according to the Associated Press.

The Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol resulted in several deaths and more than 1,230 charged with federal crimes, and now we have had an assassination attempt on a former president.

We say over and over that our thoughts and prayers are with those killed or injured. We also say over and over that now is not the time to talk about our easy access to military-grade weapons, gun proliferation or mental health solutions.

Our saying that our thoughts and prayers are with all of those injured or killed has become virtually a worthless sentiment.

Albert Einstein defined insanity as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

As we consistently remind ourselves that we live in the greatest nation in the world, we have become paralyzed when it comes to seriously working toward any meaningful solutions to our gun-violence problems. Shame on us.
