Atlanta Falcons Urged To Sign Former All-Pro Cornerback

As the Atlanta Falcons get ready for the 2024 season, the franchise is hoping to snap a playoff drought and play meaningful football late in the year.

This offseason, the Falcons made a few major adjustments that they hope will get them over the hump. The most notable move for Atlanta was bringing in Kirk Cousins to be the starting quarterback. Quarterback has been an issue for the Falcons since the Matt Ryan era came to an end, but they hope that Cousins will help provide some stability at the position.

The head-scratching move for the Falcons for many this offseason was them selecting Michael Penix with their first-round pick. While Penix might not help the Falcons this season, he could be the long-term answer for the Falcons at quarterback.

Adding Cousins fixes a major issue for the Falcons on paper for 2024, and this is a team that hopes to achieve a lot this season.

Recently, Bleacher Report spoke about why Atlanta should also sign cornerback Stephon Gilmore before the season starts.

Here’s what they had to say.

The Falcons have a good No. 1 cornerback in A.J. Terrell, but the defense could use another starting option on the other side. While Gilmore isn’t the same player he used to be, he is coming off a strong campaign in which he allowed an 83.3 passer rating when targeted and earned a 74.4 grade from Pro Football Focus.”

Stephon Gilmore would be a nice fit for the Falcons

Adding a cornerback the caliber of Gilmore would be a nice addition for the Falcons before the season. Last season, the Falcons had a solid defense overall. While Gilmore isn’t the superstar he once was, he played well last year and could be a very serviceable second cornerback for Atlanta.

Considering the Falcons signed Cousins, they should have somewhat of a win-now mindset, and adding a veteran like Gilmore makes a lot of sense. For Gilmore, he should want to join a winning team as well at this stage of his career, which the Falcons look to be.

The Falcons are currently the favorites to win the NFC South, as the division is looking lackluster on paper. Winning the division should certainly be the primary goal for Atlanta, as anything can happen in the playoffs.

As training camp and the preseason roll on, we will have to keep an eye on if the Falcons pursue some help in the secondary, and Gilmore would be a nice addition.
