Where Does 49ers’ Brock Purdy Rank Among Active NFL QBs?

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is putting the “Mr. Irrelevant” spot in a whole new light with his dazzling performances over the past couple of seasons.

Taken with the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Purdy’s rise to the top of the NFL world was not only unexpected, but also unheard of in the history of the league.

Obviously, the best example of a low-ranked draft selection to go on to become arguably the GOAT of the NFL is Tom Brady. And while Purdy is nowhere near Brady at the moment, his ability to lead San Francisco to back-to-back NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl appearance seems to suggest that the ultimate prize may not be too far down the road.

Having said that, though, the league has turned more and more into a quarterback league, and we are experiencing a high level of quarterback play making the competition quite tough.

Just last year, rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud and first-year starter Jordan Love were some of the signal callers who showed what they were capable of. Not to forget the more established greats of the game who are continuing to deliver standout performances year after year.

So that begs the question: where does Brock Purdy rank among the active quarterbacks in 2024?

The past couple of seasons have shown us that Purdy easily makes the top 15 among all active starting quarterbacks in the league.

Recently, analyst Trevor Sikkema of Pro Football Focus ranked Purdy 13th on the list, placing Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, Dak Prescott, Matthew Stafford, Aaron Rodgers, Jalen Hurts, C.J. Stroud, Jordan Love and Trevor Lawrence ahead of him.

The biggest knock on Purdy is that he plays under head coach Kyle Shanahan in an offensive system that makes it easier for quarterbacks to thrive. This is also an argument used by some experts and analysts of the game, however, that while that may be true to a certain degree, the player on the field still has to perform at a high level. How else would one be able to justify a team that nearly made consecutive Super Bowls with a rookie under center drafted with the last pick of the draft?

Taking into account the other quarterbacks ranked ahead of Purdy, the top nine from Mahomes to Hurts are pretty self explanatory. Stroud had a surprisingly amazing rookie year last season, so placing him above Purdy seems to be correct, and maybe the same goes for Love as well.

The only real reason Purdy could occupy the 12th spot ahead of Lawrence is because we have yet to witness the stellar play from Lawrence which he seemed destined to reach during his college days.

Throughout his two-year career thus far, Purdy has started 21 games, holds a 17-4 regular season record and has passed for 5,654 yards, and 44 touchdowns while throwing just 15 picks. He has been just as good in the postseason, as well, demonstrating his ability to not allow the situation to get the better of him.

It is safe to conclude that Brock Purdy is well on track to crack the top 10 sooner rather than later.
