The New York Jets were able to be victorious in their preseason opener against the Washington Commanders, as they won by a score of 20-17. While the preseason doesn’t mean much in terms of wins or losses, it’s always good to see the team get a victory.

While the win was good, the Jets are focused on preparing for Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers. After a busy offseason, the Jets are hoping that the moves that they made will be enough to get them back into the playoffs after an over decade long drought.

New York looks better on paper, but it isn’t perfect.

Recently, Bleacher Report spoke about one area that the Jets still could improve upon. They said that the Jets need help at the safety position and recommended they add Justin Simmons.

Here’s what they had to say .

“There are multiple teams this week whose add now option is Justin Simmons. That’s likely to continue to be the case as long as he’s on the market. The 30-year-old was still second-team All-Pro last season with three interceptions and 70 total tackles. It was the fourth time he’s been named to the second team All-Pro team in five years. He’s a consistent starter who hasn’t hit a production cliff yet.

The Jets could eliminate one of the few questions they have on defense by bringing in Simmons.”

Safety is the Jets’ only question mark defensively

New York doesn’t have many issues on defense, as they are projected to be one of the top units in the league as of now. However, the safety position is a bit of a question mark, and Simmons would be a nice upgrade and provide some stability in the secondary.

Currently, the Jets have one of the best cornerback duos in the league with Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed, but the loss of Jordan Whitehead at safety might be noticed.

With Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, the Jets are clearly in a win-now mode for 2024. With that being said, they must leave no stone unturned between now and the start of the season. As of now, Chuck Clark and Tony Adams are slated to be the starting safeties for New York, but they don’t have quite the success in the league as a player like Simmons.

The Jets likely won’t be the only team interested in adding Simmons, as he could be an impact player added before the season.
