4 Players on the Roster Bubble for the Kansas City Chiefs

It’s seldom an NFL player gets the opportunity to be on a team fighting for a 3-peat. So rare is this phenomenon that no team has actually ever accomplished the feat in the Super Bowl era. So what do you do when you are in such a situation? Well, first things first, you want to be part of the main 53-man roster that will feature in all the games, and the Kansas City Chiefs represent that roster in 2024.

This year is going to be a crazy year for Kansas City with all the history on the line. But the Chiefs have done well to retain most of their key players that have formed the core of this dominant run with the exception of cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, who was traded to the Titans.

What that means is that Kansas City already has a fairly good idea of most of the players who are a roster lock, meaning all those looking on from the outside need to grab the opportunity with both hands.

With that said, let us see four players on the roster bubble for the Chiefs this year.

    Cornell Powell, WR

It’s a well-known fact by now that the Chiefs struggled mightily in 2023 with dropped passes and an overall lack of quality on the offense. To counter that, the Chiefs added wide receiver Marquise Brown in the offseason and drafted Xavier Worthy with their first-round pick in this year’s draft.

They also brought back Mecole Hardman, who has a fairly good understanding of the playbook having won three rings with the Chiefs. Rashee Rice should also emerge as an even better player in Year 2 provided he is not suspended for his car accident incident in the offseason.

What does all this mean for Cornell Powell? It means the 2021 fifth-round pick is probably not going to make the final cut, as he has been unable to make any lasting impact all these years.

    Justyn Ross, WR

The big decisions in the wide receiver room keep cropping up as Justyn Ross may also get cut. Other receivers who may get cut include Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore, but it may be difficult for Ross to prove his worth over them.

Despite all the problems Toney encountered last year with drops, pass deflections leading to interceptions, and lining up offside to negate a potential game-winning touchdown, among other things, Toney has shown flashes of brilliance and is also a handy player to have on special teams.

However, Ross can make the team ahead of these two and the likes of Nikko Remigio if he can impress in the preseason.

    Deneric Prince, RB

The running back room is currently led by third-year starter Isiah Pacheco, who has been a livewire for Kansas City in the backfield. Reports have also emerged stating Pacheco’s weight loss and slimmer fit ahead of the season. He will be backed up by Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

Behind these two, the running back room is up for grabs, but the RB3 spot could very well go to Keaontay Ingram, who was on the Chiefs’ practice squad last year. Not to forget the recent addition of former Rugby player Louis Rees-Zammit, who could be added into the mix as a potential special teams player while he works on his running back skills.

All of this points to an exclusion from the 53-man roster for second-year running back Deneric Prince. Despite winning a ring as a member of the practice squad with the Chiefs last year, Prince has not found a way to break into the main team.

    Irv Smith Jr., TE

Kansas City has been riding on the broad shoulders of Travis Kelce for many years now. He has been arguably the second-most important member of the Chiefs squad outside of Patrick Mahomes in the past few years.

But, Kelce is getting along in age, and the Chiefs have tried to address that this year when they signed veteran Irv Smith Jr. They then drafted Jared Wiley in the fourth round this year to add to the competition.

The addition of Wiley seems to have knocked Smith further down the order as Noah Gray still remains Kelce’s main backup.
