Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Sounds Off On Injury To Key Playmaker

Last season, Patrick Mahomes lacked weapons, so the Kansas City Chiefs made sure they went out and rectified the problem during the offseason.

The Chiefs added a couple of big-time talents at wide receiver, signing Marquise Brown in free agency and selecting Xavier Worthy in the first round of the NFL Draft.

On paper, Kansas City suddenly had a very impressive receiving corps that also consists of Rashee Rice. But a rather big wrench was thrown into the situation when Brown suffered a collarbone injury during the Chiefs’ preseason opener.

Brown will be sidelined for four-to-six weeks, meaning he will miss Week 1 and potentially more time afterward.

This is obviously deflating news for Mahomes, who was hoping to have Brown at his disposal right off the bat.

While Mahomes is glad that Brown’s injury wasn’t too severe, he is also disappointed that he won’t have the former Arizona Cardinals speedster available in the season opener.

“I guess we’re lucky that it wasn’t as bad as it could have been,” Mahomes said, via Adam Teicher of ESPN. “We lose a little bit of that veteran-type receiver in that room. We have other guys that can replace him a little bit, but to have that much talent and have a good understanding of what I want … hopefully we’re getting him back sooner rather than later. We’ve just got to keep pushing those young [receivers] to keep getting better and better every day.”

What other options do the Chiefs have?

The Chiefs’ receiving corps now faces some major question marks heading into September.

Not only is Brown sidelined, but Kansas City is still awaiting a potential lengthy suspension for Rice due to his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run car accident back in March.

This may put ample pressure on Worthy to deliver immediately, which is a heck of a lot to ask from a rookie.

It certainly helps to have Mahomes under center. After all, he won a Super Bowl last season with Rice and not much else at the wide receiver position.

But the Chiefs would definitely still like to supply Mahomes with considerable talent.

If Brown ends up missing extensive time and Rice ultimately gets suspended, Mahomes will have to lean on tight end Travis Kelce a whole lot (like usual). Kansas City will also need to get production from an unexpected source, like Kadarius Toney or Skyy Moore.

The good news is that Brown will be back at some point within the next month-and-a-half or so, so it’s not like Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will be waiting forever.
