4 Future QB Targets for Seattle Seahawks to Replace Geno Smith

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith has seen a big resurgence in his career. From 2015 to 2022, Smith’s career as a starting quarterback in the NFL had taken a complete backseat to the extent that we may never have seen him as a full-fledged starter again.

The 2022 season, however, saw the Seahawks take a chance on him, and he delivered to an extent. He led the league in completion percentage at 69.8 percent and finished the season with 4,282 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions while leading the team to a 9-8 record. The Seahawks lost in the Wild Card Round that year, but Smith’s performance earned him the NFL Comeback Player of the Year for 2022.

Smith’s 2023 season was a bit of a decline from the previous year, but it was still a stable performance. The problem here is that Seattle has higher expectations than just winning seasons and a lone postseason appearance. As a result, the Seahawks are shaking things up with the biggest casualty being the firing of head coach Pete Carroll in place of Mike Macdonald.

At the moment, Smith’s fate in Seattle also hangs in the balance with Sam Howell waiting in the wings. The Seahawks passed up on the opportunity to trade up for a quarterback in this year’s draft, so it seems that Seattle will continue with Smith for the time being. However, should the Seahawks want to move on from Smith, here are four possible targets they could consider for the future.

    Dak Prescott

Whatever the reason the Cowboys are holding Dak Prescott’s contract is best known to them. But, while there is no pen to paper, we will continue to assume that the 2024 season will be his last in Dallas. If that is the case, Seattle may not find a better signal caller in 2025 other than the vastly experienced Prescott.

On one hand, going after Prescott would not be easy considering the amount of money he would be commanding next year. However, the Seahawks have a strong core of receivers on their roster with DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Just think about Prescott unleashing his passes to this receiving unit and what the Seahawks could be capable of.

    Justin Fields

Another potential quarterback the Seahawks could look at in 2025 is Justin Fields, who is currently the backup in Pittsburgh. The Steelers brought in both Russell Wilson and Fields and currently, it looks like the job is for Wilson to lose.

If in case Fields is not able to win the Steelers’ starting job, there is a very good chance that he will not be on their roster next season. The Seahawks could pursue Fields as a free agent and they might get a better deal considering how the former Bear’s career is shaping up.

Once again, with Fields throwing to the aforementioned Seattle receivers, there is a great chance that they can turn things around and become more competitive.

    Kenny Pickett

Kenny Pickett was selected by the Steelers in the 2022 draft with the 20th overall pick. After just two seasons with the Steelers, Pickett was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles where he currently sits behind Jalen Hurts. It looks difficult for Pickett to get any real play time unless Hurts gets injured.

Thus, the Seahawks could try and pry the former Steeler to Seattle in 2025 as a replacement for Smith. Despite going 7-5 in both his seasons as a starter, Pickett’s overall play and numbers are nothing to rave about. In fact, over the course of 2 years, he has 4,474 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, and a passer rating of 78.8.

However, Seattle may be a better fit for Pickett with all the weapons they possess on the offensive side of the ball. The former first-round draftee does have the ability to play at a higher level than what he showcased in Pittsburgh, and he will also be a cheap option in case the Seahawks want to go down that road.

    Sam Howell

The final possibility is Sam Howell, the former Washington Commanders QB who is already with the Seahawks as Smith’s backup. Howell’s case is interesting, as the Commanders took only one real season to move on from him.

Drafted in the fifth round by Washington in 2022, he played only the Week 18 game and was handed the reins as the starter in 2023. Last year, Howell had a topsy-turvy type of season throwing as many interceptions as he did touchdowns (21) while he also led the league in sacks taken. It may seem as if signing him as the backup might not be the best choice for Seattle especially if he is set to take over from Smith in the future.

However, one mixed season, and that too in just his first year as a starter is not enough to sideline him. Howell has a great arm and isn’t afraid to launch the ball downfield. With some work on his decision-making process, he could turn into a viable option for the Seahawks from 2025 onward.
