Why This Green Bay Packers’ Position Battle Is Their Most Important

There is a chance that for the second straight season, the Green Bay Packers will have the youngest roster in the NFL. They are a team on the rise, one that many people believe can contend as early as this year in the NFC.

A lot of that lies on the arm of Jordan Love. Entering his second season as the Packers’ starting quarterback, Love was excellent in his first season as the starter, replacing the legendary Aaron Rodgers.

The potential is there for the offense to take things to another level. Love is surrounded by a talented group of young wide receivers and tight ends and Josh Jacobs was added in free agency to bolster the backfield.

While everyone is excited about the potential of the offense, the defense is what will determine how much success this team will have. After three underwhelming seasons with Joe Barry has coordinator, Jeff Hafley is taking over after spending the last few years as head coach at Boston College.

Hafley is bringing a more aggressive, attacking style to the mix, one that the players are excited to be a part of. There is a lot of talent on this unit and some prominent spots in the game plan are up for grabs.

The Packers need to sort out their situation at safety

The one that people will be paying the most attention to is the safety spot. In free agency, the Green Bay Packers made a splash when they signed Xavier McKinney away from the New York Giants.

He is locked into one starting spot, but his partner has not yet been decided. As shared by Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report , this is the most important positional battle remaining this offseason.

“At training camp, [Evan] Williams has forced several turnovers . Because of that, he may earn early snaps at safety, though The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman believes [Javon] Bullard will win the battle.

[Anthony] Johnson suited up for 12 games (four starts) under former Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry last year. He had a solid rookie term, allowing a 66.8 passer rating in coverage, but new defensive play-caller Jeff Hafley may favor one of the rookies whom he likely vouched for in predraft discussions,” Moton wrote.

Regardless of who is the starter next to McKinney, this is a deep and talented group Hafley will have to work with. The safety position has been a weakness for years for the Green Bay Packers, but looks like it could quickly turn into a strength.
