Cleveland Browns Should Trade for This Intriguing Wide Receiver

Between now and the start of the regular season, the Cleveland Browns will have quite a bit of deciding to do. Cutting down the roster is a crucial part of the offseason, as the final 53-man squad is selected before the new season officially begins.

Up until now, we have already seen some trades taking place in the league (including the Browns), but there is still a possibility for more. As the preseason comes to an end, teams will be considering their depth at various positions and also looking at the injury status of players to see if they need to bolster any of those positions.

Having said that, one of the potential trade candidates doing the rounds currently is Indianapolis Colts third-year wide receiver Alec Pierce, and Cleveland could be interested.

Why the Colts may trade Alec Pierce

Pierce was drafted in the second round of the 2021 draft by the Colts. In two years, Pierce has shown significant improvement but it is his lack of consistency that is holding him back. By now Indianapolis must have expected Pierce to be one of their leading pass catchers but his overall contribution in two full seasons has been just 1,107 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

Whatever the reason behind Pierce’s slow development, the Colts now have a wide receiving unit consisting of true WR1 Michael Pittman Jr., second-year wideout Josh Downs who had a decent rookie season, and rookie receiver Adonai Mitchell as starters. Pierce is more than likely to be on the bench and the Colts may look at trading him for something in return.

Being a former second-round selection, Indianapolis may be able to receive some sort of value that they can use to bolster other positions on their roster.

Why the Browns should trade for Alec Pierce

The Browns currently have an above average wide receiving unit with Amari Cooper, Jerry Jeudi, and Elijah Moore as their starters. Cooper is obviously the number one go to guy for Deshaun Watson, but Jeudi has joined only this offseason from Denver where he didn’t exactly live up to his expectations.

As Moore, he is also in a similar situation having joined from the Jets only last season. Thus, the Browns are still working things out in their receiving room, and adding another player in the mix for competition would be seen as a positive move.

While things haven’t worked out for Pierce the way he would have wanted in Indianapolis, perhaps a change of environment could do him well. Should he join the Browns, there could be a genuine chance for him to get more snaps than what is expected with the Colts this season.
