Philadelphia Eagles Offensive Star Gets Brutally Honest On Future

Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson has been one of the best players at his position for a long time. Since entering the NFL as a first-round draft pick in 2013, he has made five Pro Bowl appearances while earning a couple of First-Team All-Pro selections.

However, Father Time waits for no one, and while Johnson is still very productive, it may be weighing on him heading into 2024. At least from a mental standpoint.

“I think physically … I could play to 40,” Johnson said, via Jeff Neiburg of The Philly Inquirer . “With my movement, I think physically I can do it. What weighs on my mind is just, my kids are getting older; my dad’s getting older and has had some health issues.”

Johnson has been in the league for 11 years and has already accomplished everything for which he could ask. He has established himself as one off the league’s best offensive linemen. He has earned individual accolades. He has won a Super Bowl. But the Eagles star understands his time may be up soon.

“We’ll see,” Johnson said. “It’s hard to step away from something you love and something that you’ve done for so long. I grew up as an only child, so this is really the only brothers that I’ve had, being a part of a team.”

The 34-year-old added that he could “realistically” see himself playing two or three more years.

Can the Eagles rebound from a disastrous 2023 campaign?

The Eagles looked like they were bound to repeat as NFC champions through their first 11 games of last season, as they got off to a 10-1 start.

    Then, disaster struck.

Philadelphia proceeded to lose five of its last six regular-season games to finish 11-6, making the Eagles the first time in NFL history to win 10 of their first 11 contests and not reach the 12-win mark.

To put the cherry on top, Philly was then blasted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.

It was certainly a stark change from 2022, when the Eagles made it all the way to the Super Bowl before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Philadelphia has made an effort to bounce back this offseason, signing running back Saquon Barkley in free agency and addressing its ailing secondary through the NFL Draft.

However, the Eagles lost center Jason Kelce to retirement, and while they did sign edge rusher Bryce Huff, they also traded Haason Reddick, which could be seen as a downgrade.

We’ll see if Johnson and the Eagles can rebound with a strong campaign in 2024.
