The Kansas City Chiefs’ Biggest Weakness, Revealed

The Kansas City Chiefs will be looking to make some NFL history during the 2024 season. The back-to-back Super Bowl winners are looking to become the first team to ever win three Lombardi Trophies in a row.

Winning one Super Bowl is difficult in itself; winning multiple in a row is something only the best teams in NFL history have been able to accomplish. Having Andy Reid as head coach and Patrick Mahomes at quarterback executing his offense certainly helps.

As long as those two remain in the fold, the Chiefs are going to be among the favorites. But, even the best teams have some shortcomings they need to overcome.

Last season, a weakness for the team was wide receiver. None of their younger players developed and took that next step that they hoped for.

Rookie Rashee Rice stepped up big time and Mahomes was able to help overcome the deficiency at the position and produce at a high level. This year, it is yet another offensive skill position the team is worried about.

In the opinion of Dallas Robinson of Pro Football Network, the biggest concern for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024 is their running back depth. For a title-contending team, that essentially means there isn’t a glaring weakness on their roster.

“Left tackle might’ve been a question heading into Chiefs training camp, but second-round rookie Kingsley Suamataia grabbed the starting job with an eye-opening summer performance.

If we’re going to quibble with Kansas City’s roster, we’ll go to running back, where the Chiefs are still searching for options behind starter Isiah Pacheco.

Clyde Edwards-Helarie is back on a one-year deal but has recently battled episodes of post-traumatic stress disorder. K.C. has given reps to backups like Deneric Prince and Carston Steele (nominally a fullback) during camp,” Robinson wrote.

In the last few seasons, it has been Jerick McKinnon rounding out the depth at running back. He is someone that Reid trusted, especially in passing situations, and he remains a free agent.

The Kansas City Chiefs could certainly look to reunite with him to add some much-needed insurance in the backfield. Expect this to be a position that the team scours the waiver wire for once cuts begin to happen across the league.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire, a former first-round pick, provides some solid depth, but as Robinson noted, as been battling some issues in camp. Bringing in another proven veteran, even for just the practice squad, would be a smart move.
