The Washington Commanders underwent an overhaul at all levels of their franchise over the last year. From ownership down to the players on the roster, things will look a lot different in Washington in 2024.

The biggest change that the Commanders made on the field was at the quarterback position. With the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Washington selected LSU star and reigning Heisman trophy winner, Jayden Daniels.

Daniels has the upside to be a star in this league, but some patience will have to be exhibited. The team is still in the earlier stages of the rebuild, as they are looking for weapons to emerge around him to elevate the unit.

One position that the Commanders are actually in good hands is at running back. The team has holdover Brian Robinson Jr. from the previous regime and signed Austin Ekeler away from the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency.

A tandem like that could be difficult for Fantasy Football managers to figure out. But, the offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury has already revealed that set roles are in place for their running back duo.

As shared by John Keim of ESPN, it will be Robinson handling a majority of the work for the Commanders on early downs. Kingsbury is high on him as a runner and believes he will showcase his talent throughout the 2024 season.

“He’s a No. 1 back in this league, there’s no doubt. After this season, if he stays healthy, people will recognize what he can do in the run game.”

That means Ekeler will be operating as the passing game and third-down back. That is a role he relishes, as part of the reason he left Los Angeles was that he didn’t believe he was a fit for Jim Harbaugh’s run-first, smashmouth offense.

Ekeler is a capable runner, which means we could see him sprinkled in at times. But, the set roles will make things much easier to figure out for anyone running a Fantasy Football team.

Managers will likely target Ekeler ahead of Robinson, especially in PPR leagues, because of the upside that he provides. Also, taking into account the projections for the Washington Commanders this season.

They are expected to lose a lot, which means trailing in games. More passing attempts mean more potential work for Ekeler compared to Robinson, who will be leaned on to drain clock late in games.
