New York Giants Urged to Make Trade to Upgrade on Offense

One of the goals of the New York Giants this offseason was to upgrade the weapons on offense. They suffered several losses, creating more voids in a unit that was already lacking in high-end playmakers.

Running back Saquon Barkley departing in free agency stung. His joining the NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles was just salt in the wound.

Also leaving this offseason was tight end Darren Waller. He opted to retire after one injury-riddled season with the franchise.

Those were two major voids that needed to be filled by general manager Joe Schoen this offseason. He was able to address running back, signing Devin Singletary in free agency and selecting Tyrone Tracy Jr. out of Purdue in the 2024 NFL Draft.

With the No. 6 overall pick in the draft, the Giants added an elite playmaker in LSU star wide receiver Malik Nabers. He has looked like the real deal throughout the offseason.

He was also able to snag a tight end later in the draft, selecting Theo Johnson out of Penn State. A matchup nightmare in the passing game, Johnson has a very high ceiling, but the team may not rely on him full-time as a starter yet.

If they are seeking some more help at the position, Alex Kay of Bleacher Report has provided them with an intriguing option; making a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers for tight end Pat Freiermuth.

Kay has suggested that the Giants offer the Steelers a 2026 fifth-round pick in exchange for their starting tight end.

“While Freiermuth is coming off a down 2023 season—he notched a meager 32 receptions for 308 yards and two touchdowns—he’s only a year removed from a breakout 63-catch, 732-yard campaign. He also found pay dirt seven times as a rookie in 2021 and could re-emerge as a regular scoring threat if he lands with the Giants,” Kay wrote.

It is certainly an intriguing idea that Kay has presented. If Pittsburgh isn’t going to retain Freiermuth long-term, which is a possibility since they do have Darnell Washington on the depth chart behind him, shopping him would make some sense.

Being able to acquire a legitimate weapon in the passing game for such an affordable price would be a steal for the New York Giants. Freiermuth is a difference maker when healthy, someone who can stretch the seam and do the dirty work over the middle of the field.

Adding another reliable set of hands in the passing game certainly wouldn’t hurt Schoen. Setting Daniel Jones up with as much help as possible is the only way to know for sure if he is their long-term quarterback or not.
