The Houston Texans shocked everyone in the football world with their performance during the 2023 season. They came out of nowhere to win the AFC South title, led by their rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud.
The No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, he had one of the most productive rookie seasons ever. Had he not missed a few games because of injury, he would have squarely been in the MVP conversation with how well that he played.
Last season, Stroud completed 63.9 percent of his passes for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns with only five interceptions. He led the NFL in interception percentage and yards per game, finishing eighth in the MVP voting while taking home the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award and being named a Pro Bowler.
Rapidly moving up the quarterback power rankings, the Texans look to have a bonafide star on their hands.
Heading into the 2024 season, there is some pressure on Stroud and Houston to continue building and heading in the right direction. Expectations are on the rise, as he is regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
How highly is the former Buckeyes star looked upon? Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports has him ranked as the No. 5 player at his position heading into Week 1.
“The weight of expectations may well be Stroud’s biggest hurdle after the Ohio State product burst onto the scene in 2023, vaulting the Texans forward with calm, collected and confident downfield darts. With an even deeper supporting cast, it’s no wonder he’s a popular MVP pick at just 22,” Benjamin wrote.
The deeper supporting cast that Benjamin mentions is the veterans that the Texans acquired this offseason. Wide receiver Stefon Diggs was brought in from the Buffalo Bills and Joe Mixon was acquired from the Cincinnati Bengals.
Both players should make life even easier for Stroud, who is surrounded by a ton of talent. Nico Collins, Tank Dell and Dalton Schultz remain in the mix as well.
If everything clicks as it did in 2023, the Houston Texans are going to be a tough out every week.
