Pittsburgh Steelers Key Offensive Player Dealing With Injury Again

Pittsburgh Steelers veteran quarterback Russell Wilson won the competition for the starting job over the summer against Justin Fields. He was ready to be on the field in Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons, but his status is now up in the air.

As shared by Brooke Pryor of ESPN, Wilson is dealing with tightness in his calf and was limited in practice on Thursday. This is the same injury that kept him sidelined for the majority of training camp.

Head coach Mike Tomlin did not reveal how the injury news came about but did say that his starter would undergo more testing out of an abundance of caution.

“His calf got tight, so we wanted to exercise some precaution,” Tomlin said. “We’ll see what tomorrow looks like and kind of go from there.”

Wilson won’t be talking to the media until Friday, as his scheduled presser for Thursday afternoon was postponed.

The injury first occurred during the team’s conditioning test right before training camp began. It led to the veteran not throwing a pass in practice for 10 days.

By the end of camp, he was a full participant, which helped him lock down the starting job. After appearing in the final two preseason games, he revealed how good he was feeling.

Luckily for the Pittsburgh Steelers, they are very confident in Fields stepping into the starting role should the need arise this weekend. Tomlin revealed that no changes are coming to the game plan regardless of who is under center.

“It really doesn’t [affect game-planning] at all, to be honest with you,” he said.

“I’m extremely comfortable if that is the case, certainly,” Tomlin said.

Fields has plenty of reps with the first-team offense because of Wilson’s offseason injury. This is certainly not an ideal way to begin the 2024 campaign, but this is why it is so important to have not one, but two quarterbacks you are confident in having in the lineup.
