Earlier this week, the Denver Broncos and cornerback Patrick Surtain agreed to a record-setting contract extension. The first-round pick from the 2021 NFL Draft became the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history with the deal. It was a title that he held only for a few days, as that contract has reportedly been surpassed. According to NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Miami Dolphins and star cornerback Jalen Ramsey have agreed to a deal that makes him the highest-paid player at the position.
A three-year extension has reportedly been worked out that will pay Ramsey $24.1 million annually. He is set to earn $55.3 million this season, meaning he will have the highest career earnings for a cornerback in NFL history.
That annual average barely surpasses the number Surtain agreed to with the Broncos, which was $24 million. This is the second time in Ramsey’s storied career that he has held the top spot for a cornerback contract.
For several weeks, the two sides have been working toward a deal. There is a good chance they were waiting for the Surtain domino to fall so that they could figure out what it would take to make Ramsey the highest-paid at his position.
The star is currently dealing with a calf injury, but there is optimism that he will be ready to go for Week 1. The Dolphins will be playing against one of his former teams, the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Injuries played a major factor in Ramsey’s first season in Miami. He played in only 10 games after being acquired in a trade from the Los Angeles Rams but played well enough that he still earned a Pro Bowl nod.
The Florida State product is entering his ninth season in the NFL. He will be a key component in Anthony Weaver’s defensive game plan, as the Miami Dolphins’ pass rush has been ravaged by injuries coming into the season.
